OpenAI cuts Pro price
OpenAI introduced a new $100/month ChatGPT Pro tier positioned between Plus and its top plan, with materially higher Codex usage limits than Plus. The move was framed as a pricing reset to compete with Claude and to offer heavier code-generation quotas for paid users. (engadget.com)
OpenAI has added a new $100-a-month ChatGPT Pro plan, cutting the entry price for its premium tier in half. (help.openai.com) The new plan sits between ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month and the existing $200 Pro plan, which OpenAI said will remain on sale. OpenAI updated its Pro plan help page on April 11, 2026, to describe the $100 option as “built for real projects.” (help.openai.com) OpenAI said the $100 tier gives users 5 times the usage limits of Plus for advanced tools including Codex and Deep Research. For a limited-time launch offer, it said Codex usage on the $100 plan will run at 10 times Plus through May 31. (help.openai.com) Codex is OpenAI’s coding agent inside ChatGPT, aimed at longer software-writing sessions rather than occasional prompts. OpenAI said Plus is for “select projects throughout the week,” while the $100 plan is for people using those tools across real projects. (help.openai.com) The new tier closes a pricing gap that had stretched from $20 a month straight to $200 a month. TechCrunch reported on April 9 that power users had been asking for a middle option and that OpenAI described the plan as a direct answer to heavier coding use. (techcrunch.com) It also brings OpenAI’s consumer pricing closer to Anthropic’s. Anthropic’s pricing page lists Claude Pro at $20 a month and Claude Max starting at $100 a month, with a higher $200 Max option above that. (claude.com) OpenAI told TechCrunch the new plan is meant to offer “more practical coding capacity for the money” during intense coding sessions. The company also said more than 3 million people were using Codex each week globally, up 5 times in three months. (techcrunch.com) The $200 Pro plan still carries the highest allowance, at 20 times the limits of Plus, and OpenAI said both Pro plans keep the same core features. The main difference now is how much usage a subscriber needs to buy. (help.openai.com) For ChatGPT subscribers, the immediate change is simpler than the branding suggests: the premium ladder is now $20, $100, and $200, with Codex limits doing most of the work in separating the tiers.
