Broadway Spring Season Launches
"Cats: The Jellicle Ball" is set to open at the Broadhurst Theatre on April 7, with the cast providing detailed breakdowns of their roles. Playbill highlights 5 new Broadway plays premiering this spring, with over 15 productions slated to open before the season ends.
The rush of spring openings is a strategic race to the Tony Awards eligibility deadline on April 26. Productions must have their official opening night by this date to be considered for the 79th Annual Tony Awards, which will be held on June 7. This condensed timeframe for premieres creates a highly competitive and exciting period in the Broadway calendar. This season sees a significant influx of Hollywood talent to the stage. Emmy winners and "The Bear" co-stars Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach will lead the new play "Dog Day Afternoon." Other notable stars making their Broadway debuts include two-time Academy Award winner Adrien Brody in "The Fear of 13," and both Emmy winner Ayo Edebiri and Academy Award nominee Don Cheadle in a revival of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Proof." The revival of "Cats," titled "Cats: The Jellicle Ball," is a radical reimagining of the classic musical, now set in the world of LGBTQ+ vogue balls. This production, which was a sold-out hit Off-Broadway, incorporates ballroom and club beats with runway-ready choreography, transforming the Jellicle Ball into a fierce competition. The cast features a mix of Broadway veterans and icons from the real-life ballroom scene. Veteran stage actors are also a major draw this spring. Three-time Tony Award winner Nathan Lane and two-time Tony winner Laurie Metcalf will star in a revival of Arthur Miller's classic "Death of a Salesman." Daniel Radcliffe, a Tony winner himself, is returning to Broadway in the solo show "Every Brilliant Thing." Additionally, Tony winner Renée Elise Goldsberry will make her return to Broadway after a decade in the new play "The Balusters." Several productions are arriving on Broadway after acclaimed runs elsewhere. "Giant," a new play about author Roald Dahl, comes to New York after an Olivier Award-winning run in London, with John Lithgow reprising his starring role. The musical "Titanique," a comedic take on the movie "Titanic" featuring the music of Céline Dion, comes to Broadway after a successful Off-Broadway run and an Olivier Award win in London. The historic Broadhurst Theatre, which opened in 1917, will be home to "Cats: The Jellicle Ball." The theater was designed by Herbert J. Krapp and has housed numerous iconic productions over its long history, including "Cabaret," "Grease," and "Mamma Mia!" The spring season offers a diverse slate of other new shows as well. "The Rocky Horror Show" returns in a new revival, and "Fallen Angels," a Noël Coward comedy, will star Rose Byrne and Kelli O'Hara. For those looking for a story with cinematic roots, a new musical based on the 1988 film "Beaches" is also set to premiere.
