Claude and Codex Now Integrated into GitHub Copilot

GitHub has integrated Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's Codex models as coding agents for its Copilot Business and Pro users. The integration is available across GitHub, VS Code, and GitHub Mobile. This move broadens the accessibility of advanced LLM-powered coding assistants for development teams, including those in the government contracting sector.

The integration is part of GitHub's "Agent HQ" strategy, which aims to embed multiple, distinct AI agents directly into developer workflows. This allows users with Copilot Pro+ or Enterprise subscriptions to assign tasks like bug fixes or feature generation to Copilot, Claude, or Codex and compare their different approaches to solving the same problem. Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI researchers, designed its Claude models around a "constitution" to prioritize safety and ethical behavior. Its agentic coding tool, Claude Code, can delegate and execute coding tasks directly from the command line. Notably, Claude is reportedly the only AI of its kind currently utilized by the U.S. military for classified work. OpenAI's Codex was the original model that powered the first version of GitHub Copilot in 2021, translating natural language into code suggestions. It has since evolved from a simple code completion tool into an autonomous agent that can write new features, run tests, and propose pull requests for review within a secure cloud sandbox. The latest version, GPT-5.3-Codex, is optimized for long-running, tool-using workflows and is the first OpenAI model classified as "High capability" for cybersecurity tasks. This move to offer more powerful, enterprise-ready AI coding tools aligns directly with stated Pentagon objectives. The DoD's Chief Digital and AI Office (CDAO) recently issued a call for commercial solutions to equip its developer workforce with AI-enabled coding tools, noting a gap that "places the department at a disadvantage relative to the pace of innovation in the private sector." For government contractors, Copilot for Business offers specific features crucial for secure environments, such as VPN proxy support and AI-based filtering that blocks insecure code suggestions like hardcoded credentials or SQL injections. Crucially, GitHub's business-tier policy states that customer code snippets are not retained or used to train the public models. The availability of these advanced agents can directly impact small businesses competing for government contracts. For tech companies pursuing SBIR/STTR awards, these tools can accelerate the development of prototypes and feasibility studies. The Army, for instance, has an active SBIR topic seeking AI/ML tools to help commanders manage overwhelming data, a challenge where rapid, AI-assisted software development is critical.
