ZVEI Publishes Guidance on Streetlight Surge Protection

A new technical paper from Germany's ZVEI details the importance of surge protection in luminaires for Class II street lighting. The guidance addresses the need for electrical resilience in outdoor lighting to ensure reliability and longevity, key factors in sustainable urban projects.

- Power surges are a primary cause of premature failure in outdoor LED lighting, with damage often occurring to the sensitive electronic drivers that regulate voltage and current. These surges can be caused by lightning strikes (even distant ones), switching operations in the power grid, or short-circuits. - Even minor, repetitive surges that don't cause immediate failure can degrade LED components over time, leading to reduced brightness, flickering, and a significantly shortened lifespan from the advertised 50,000-100,000 hours. - An analysis of surge damage often reveals that multiple streetlights in an area are affected, not just a single luminaire, indicating a widespread impact from a single surge event. - For Class II luminaires, which have double or reinforced insulation, product standards like IEC 60598-1 dictate that surge protective devices (SPDs) must not be connected to the earth or the metal enclosure, requiring specific protection strategies. - A multi-level defense is considered best practice, with a primary SPD at the distribution cabinet or base of the pole and secondary protection at the power input of the luminaire itself. - The cost of adding a surge protector is often minimal compared to the replacement cost of the luminaire, especially for higher-priced HID-to-LED replacement fixtures used in street lighting. - International standards such as IEC 61643-11 and UL 1449 provide classifications and testing requirements for SPDs, ensuring they meet specific performance and safety benchmarks for protecting lighting systems. - Without adequate protection, common failures include recurring damage to the driver's power supply, dimmed or flickering lights, and batch failures of luminaires along the same street section.
