Hong Kong Hosts Asia's 50 Best

Hong Kong is hosting Asia's 50 Best Restaurants for the first time this March, sparking a citywide culinary celebration. The event is drawing chefs, food writers, and culinary tourists for pop-up dinners, collaborations, and signature tastings across the city.

This marks a significant milestone for the city, which has never before hosted the prestigious culinary awards, now in its 14th edition. The event follows a triumphant 2025 for Hong Kong's hospitality scene, which saw Bar Leone crowned The World's Best Bar and Rosewood Hong Kong named The World's Best Hotel. The 2026 awards ceremony, taking place on March 25, follows the 2025 event held in Seoul. Hong Kong's own restaurants are expected to feature prominently, after a strong showing last year where The Chairman and Wing secured the #2 and #3 spots in Asia, respectively. The week-long event serves as a critical spotlight for a local dining industry facing significant headwinds. In the year leading up to April 2025, restaurant closures outpaced openings for the first time in six years, resulting in a net loss of 255 licensed establishments. The total number of licensed restaurants stood at 17,154 in April 2025, down from 17,409 a year prior. Industry experts attribute the recent downturn in part to a shift in consumer behavior, with many Hong Kong residents traveling to mainland China for more affordable dining options. This makes the influx of international culinary tourists for the 50 Best events a welcome boost for the city's Canto-Western gastronomic scene. Despite the challenges in the local restaurant market, Hong Kong's broader tourism sector is experiencing a rebound. The city welcomed nearly 50 million visitors in 2025, which marked a 12% increase from 2024, signaling a growing international interest in the city. A major highlight of the week is the "50 Best Signature Sessions," running from March 20-26, which will feature 11 exclusive collaborations. These one-off dining experiences will pair acclaimed Hong Kong restaurants with top international chefs, such as a culinary meeting between Hong Kong's Wing and Onjium from Seoul.
