OpenAI and AWS Launch Stateful AI

OpenAI's new stateful AI is now available on AWS Bedrock, giving AI agents persistent memory and context across sessions. This is a major shift from stateless models, enabling more complex, durable automations for enterprise workflows like supply chain orchestration. AWS is also streamlining the deployment of these agents for end-to-end process automation.

The joint announcement from OpenAI and Amazon introduces a "Stateful Runtime Environment" natively on Amazon Bedrock. This is designed to solve a core operational challenge for developers: stateless APIs require them to build their own complex orchestration layers to manage memory, tool interactions, and error handling for multi-step tasks. The new runtime allows agents to automatically carry forward context, including memory, tool state, and workflow history, directly within a customer's AWS environment. This move signals a significant architectural shift, positioning Bedrock as a more comprehensive platform for building and deploying production-grade AI agents. While OpenAI reaffirmed its partnership with Microsoft, noting Azure will remain the exclusive cloud provider for its stateless APIs, this AWS collaboration firmly plants OpenAI in multi-cloud territory. The partnership also includes a $50 billion investment in OpenAI from Amazon and a commitment for OpenAI to consume 2 gigawatts of AWS's Trainium AI accelerator capacity. For supply chain operations, this technology can directly address disruptions by enabling multi-agent AI systems to collaborate on complex problems in real time. For instance, a Fujitsu solution built on a precursor, AWS Bedrock Agent Core, was able to quantify the supply chain impact of an earthquake in two hours, a task that took competitors three days. Stateful agents can manage long-running processes like tracking an order across multiple systems, handling exceptions, and resuming after interruptions without losing context. Under the hood, Amazon's Bedrock AgentCore provides the foundational services for these new capabilities, including secure runtimes, identity management, and observability. The stateful environment is jointly trained by OpenAI and AWS to run optimally on AWS infrastructure, integrating with these existing AgentCore services. General availability is expected in the coming months, with early access available for enterprise teams.
