Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez situation

Liam Rosenior and others are talking publicly about Enzo Fernandez’s role at Chelsea and the need to build player connections as the club navigates form and personnel questions. ( ) Those conversations are appearing alongside tactical debates about Chelsea’s midfield structure. ( )

Enzo Fernandez’s Chelsea role is under fresh scrutiny because he is serving an internal suspension and will miss Sunday’s Premier League game against Manchester City. (nytimes.com) Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior said on April 5 that Fernandez had been left out of the 7-0 FA Cup win over Port Vale after comments about his future during the international break, and Sky Sports reported he would also miss the City match as punishment. Rosenior said his relationship with Fernandez is “in a very good place” and added, “Things aren't what people maybe think they are.” (skysports.com) The Athletic reported on April 10 that Fernandez had apologized to Chelsea but still had “hurdles to overcome,” with the midfielder serving the second game of his club suspension against City. USA Today separately reported on April 12 that Chelsea would face City without Fernandez as the club chased a UEFA Champions League place. (nytimes.com (usatoday.com)) That absence lands in a crowded midfield. Chelsea’s updated 2025-26 squad list includes Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Andrey Santos and Dario Essugo alongside Fernandez, giving Rosenior several ways to build a double pivot or a three-man midfield. (chelseafc.com) The tactical question is not whether Fernandez can play deep, advanced or box-to-box; Chelsea’s own profile describes him as a midfielder who can operate as a playmaker and also support attacks. The question is which partnerships give Chelsea the most balance when Rosenior wants control in possession and protection without the ball. (chelseafc.com) Fernandez had been central to Chelsea’s better run earlier in 2026. The club said on February 5 that he started all five Premier League matches in January, produced three goals and one assist, and had been absent from the league line-up for only two fixtures all season at that point. (chelseafc.com) He also scored the stoppage-time winner in Chelsea’s 3-2 comeback against West Ham United on January 31, a result the Premier League said pushed the club into the top four that night. That form helps explain why his current absence has become both a disciplinary issue and a football issue. (premierleague.com) Chelsea’s alternatives are not all in the same condition. Lavia only returned from injury on March 1 after not featuring since the Qarabag match on November 5, and the club said on February 20 that he was being managed carefully after a thigh problem. (chelseafc.com (chelseafc.com)) Santos, by contrast, has been part of the recent run and spoke on April 6 about Chelsea’s “very important” home game against City after the Port Vale win. Essugo, signed from Sporting in June 2025 on a contract through 2033, gives Rosenior another defensive-minded option if he wants more ball-winning than passing range. (chelseafc.com (chelseafc.com)) Fernandez remains a 25-year-old Argentina international under contract until 2031, and Rosenior has kept saying the issue is manageable inside the dressing room. For Chelsea, the next step is simpler than the debate around it: restore one of their most-used midfielders and decide which connections around him actually hold up in the run-in.
