Three Southern California residents were sentenced after prosecutors said they used a bear costume to fake animal damage inside luxury cars and collect insurance money. (nbcnews.com) The California Department of Insurance said the scheme targeted a 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost, a 2015 Mercedes G63 AMG and a 2022 Mercedes E350 in the Lake Arrowhead area in 2024. Investigators said insurers paid out $141,839 on the claims. (patch.com) Authorities said the group sent insurers videos that were supposed to show a bear inside the vehicles. A California Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist reviewed the footage and concluded it was “clearly a human in a bear suit,” according to the insurance department. (nbcnews.com) Auto insurance fraud cases often start with a damage claim and supporting photos or video, then turn into criminal cases if investigators can show the evidence was staged. California’s insurance department runs a public fraud-reporting system and a separate portal for insurers to refer suspected fraudulent claims. (insurance.ca.gov) In this case, the false bear story mattered because black bears are a familiar explanation for property damage in California mountain communities, including around Lake Arrowhead. State and national coverage noted that bears breaking into homes, trash areas and even backyards have been a recurring issue across parts of California. (usatoday.com) Investigators said they served a search warrant at a suspect’s home and found the bear costume used in the videos. Patch reported that the costume had been fitted with sharp “meat shredding” claws that investigators said were used to gouge the interiors. (patch.com) The four people charged in November 2024 were Ruben Tamrazian, 26, Ararat Chirkinian, 39, and Vahe Muradkhanyan, 32, all of Glendale, and Alfiya Zuckerman, 39, of Valley Village, according to the department and Patch. Later reports on the sentencings said three defendants were convicted, while Chirkinian is scheduled to return to court in September for a preliminary hearing. (patch.com) (insurancejournal.com) The sentencings announced on April 17, 2026, included probation and jail time, with at least one defendant ordered to serve 180 days. Two defendants were also ordered to pay more than $50,000 in restitution, while restitution for another remains to be determined, according to reports citing the department. (insurancejournal.com) (nbcnews.com) The case ended where it began: with footage that was supposed to show a wild animal, and instead helped prosecutors argue that the “bear” was part of the fraud.
