Apple Debuts $599 MacBook Neo

Apple has unveiled the MacBook Neo, a new $599 laptop aimed directly at the budget-friendly market dominated by Chromebooks and low-end Windows PCs. The move signals Apple's intent to capture a larger share of the education and entry-level consumer segments.

This strategic price point is a direct challenge to the dominance of Chromebooks in the education sector, where they hold approximately 60% of the global market share. Apple is offering an even steeper discount for educational institutions, pricing the MacBook Neo at $499. To achieve this lower price, Apple has diverged from its M-series chips for the first time in its laptop line, instead opting for the A18 Pro chip, previously used in the iPhone 16 Pro. This move leverages the power of their mobile processors to deliver what Apple claims is performance up to three times faster for AI workloads compared to competing budget PCs. The base $599 model comes with 8GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD. An upgrade to a 512GB SSD is available for $699, a version that also includes a Touch ID sensor, which is absent from the entry-level configuration. Despite its budget positioning, Apple maintains a premium build with an all-aluminum enclosure, a 13-inch Liquid Retina display, and a reported 16-hour battery life. The MacBook Neo is available in four colors: blush, indigo, silver, and citrus. This launch marks a significant shift for Apple, which has historically avoided the sub-$1000 laptop market. The move comes as analysts predict a contraction in the sub-$500 PC market due to rising component costs, potentially positioning the MacBook Neo in a less crowded field. The MacBook Neo features two USB-C ports but omits the MagSafe charging port found on higher-end MacBooks. It supports one external display up to 4K. Pre-orders began on March 4th, with the official availability starting on March 11th.
