Wooden Block System Touts Efficiency

Construction personality Mike Holmes highlighted EZ Blocks, a wooden building system designed for efficient and cost-effective construction. The system is marketed as an innovative solution for both temporary and permanent installations that can help address industry labor shortages.

- The system, previously known as GripBlock, gained prominence in Toronto during the COVID-19 pandemic as a solution for building temporary outdoor dining patios for restaurants. Its applications have since expanded to include pop-up markets, trade show booths, public ice rinks, and landscaping elements like retaining walls. - Each block is a type of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) made from post-industrial recycled wood offcuts and features patented GRIPMetal technology. This consists of thousands of hardened aluminum teeth that create a "metal velcro" bond, allowing for assembly with minimal training and no chemicals or adhesives. - The "Holmes Approved" status signifies that the product is part of Mike Holmes's partnership program, where he endorses products and builders that meet his standards for quality and durability. Holmes has featured EZ Blocks on his show, using them for projects like planters and backyard seating areas. - Modular, easy-to-assemble systems like EZ Blocks are a response to construction industry labor shortages, which in 2025 were estimated to be around 500,000 workers in the U.S. Such innovations aim to reduce construction time and the need for highly skilled on-site labor. - Unlike traditional wood construction, the materials used in the blocks are not a food source for termites and their solid-wall design provides no nesting areas for vermin. - For business graduates targeting construction management, common entry-level roles include "Project Engineer" or "Field Engineer". These positions focus on the business aspects of construction, such as managing submittals, RFIs, change orders, scheduling, and budgeting. - Key transferable skills from a business degree to construction management include budgeting, strategic planning, and organizational leadership. Proficiency in project management software like Procore or Autodesk is also highly valued.
