Murray Injures Ankle for Nuggets
Denver Nuggets star guard Jamal Murray left the game with a left ankle injury and his status is now day-to-day. Murray's absence could impact Denver's playoff seeding in a tight Western Conference race. The injury comes at a crucial time as the Nuggets fight for positioning heading into the postseason.
The injury occurred with just over a minute left in the first half against the New York Knicks, a game the Nuggets would go on to lose 142-103, tying a franchise record for the largest home loss. Murray stepped on the foot of teammate Nikola Jokic after contesting a shot by OG Anunoby and had to be helped to the locker room. This marks another unfortunate setback for Murray, who has a history of significant injuries, including a torn ACL that caused him to miss the entire 2021-22 season. He has also dealt with various ankle sprains throughout his career, including missing 10 straight games with a sprained ankle in early 2020. The timing is particularly frustrating as the game against the Knicks was the first time the Nuggets' original starting lineup had been fully healthy and on the court together since November 12. The injury interrupts the momentum of what has been a career-best season for Murray, who is averaging 25.7 points and 7.3 assists per game. Without Murray, the primary ball-handling duties will likely fall to a combination of players, including newly acquired Tyus Jones and Jalen Pickett. So far this season, the Nuggets have a record of 4-1 in games that Murray has not played. The Western Conference playoff race is incredibly tight, with the Nuggets currently sitting in the 5th seed at 39-25. Their position is precarious, with multiple teams close behind them in the standings, making any extended absence for Murray a significant blow to their hopes of securing a top seed. Denver's upcoming schedule does them no favors. Their March slate includes matchups against several tough opponents, including the Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns, and Dallas Mavericks, all teams fighting for playoff position.
