Axel Springer Acquires Bisnow

German media giant Axel Springer has acquired Bisnow, a leading commercial real estate media and events company. The deal marks a significant consolidation in the B2B media space and expands Axel Springer's footprint in the U.S. market.

This acquisition continues Axel Springer's strategic push into the U.S. market, specifically targeting profitable, niche B2B media companies. The German publisher has a track record of acquiring established digital brands, including its high-profile purchases of Politico and Business Insider, as it diversifies its portfolio beyond traditional German-language news. The deal marks an exit for private equity firm The Wicks Group, which acquired a majority stake in Bisnow in 2016 for an estimated $50 million. Under its ownership, Bisnow has grown, with current estimated annual revenues reaching $54.3 million. Bisnow has established itself as a major player in the commercial real estate sector through its blend of digital newsletters and a heavy focus on in-person events. The company hosts over 340 events annually, drawing more than 70,000 attendees and connecting a subscriber base of nearly three-quarters of a million executives. The acquisition aligns with Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner's vision to build a "high-margin, hyper-growth business" beyond traditional journalism. The company has been actively seeking new digital media properties to invest in, and the Bisnow deal adds a significant events-based revenue stream to its U.S. operations.
