God of War Gets 2D Spin-off
Sony shadow-dropped God of War: Sons of Sparta, a $30 2D Metroidvania focusing on young Kratos and his brother Deimos in Greek mythology. After 20 hours and 53% completion, reviewers noted it "offers an interesting character study but doesn't hit Metroidvania notes as naturally as Hollow Knight Silksong". Sony also announced a full remake of the original God of War Greek trilogy.
- Kratos’s brother, Deimos, was a central character in the 2010 PlayStation Portable title *God of War: Ghost of Sparta*. In that game's story, the gods kidnapped Deimos as a child due to a prophecy about a "Marked Warrior" who would destroy Olympus. - The new 2D game was developed by Mega Cat Studios, a retro-style game developer, with story input from Santa Monica Studio. The only other 2D game in the franchise was *God of War: Betrayal*, a side-scroller released for mobile phones in 2007. - Terrence C. Carson, the original voice actor for Kratos in the Greek saga, reprises his role for *Sons of Sparta* and also announced his return for the upcoming trilogy remake. This marks his first time voicing the character since 2013's *God of War: Ascension*. - The trilogy remake will consist of full remakes of *God of War* (2005), *God of War II* (2007), and *God of War III* (2010). Sony has stated that the project is in the very early stages of development. - Chronologically, *Sons of Sparta* is a prequel to the entire series, taking place before the events of *God of War: Ascension* and the flashback sequences in *God of War: Ghost of Sparta*. - While described as a Metroidvania, some reviews note that *Sons of Sparta* plays more like a traditional 2D action-platformer with a linear story, distinguishing it from the genre's typical emphasis on open exploration.
