Free Concert Series Returns to Golden Gate Park
Illuminate LIVE has returned to the Golden Gate Park Bandshell for its sixth season of free public concerts. The series, which aims to provide accessible arts to the San Francisco community, kicked off its new season on March 1st.
The free concerts are powered by Illuminate, the same arts non-profit behind the iconic "Bay Lights" installation on the Bay Bridge. The organization's founder, Ben Davis, has a background in large-scale public art and aims to create "impossible works of public art that, through awe, free humanity's better nature." This vision of creating transformative public experiences is backed by a number of philanthropists, including WordPress co-founder and Automattic CEO, Matt Mullenweg. The series is held at the historic Golden Gate Park Bandshell, which underwent a nearly $1 million renovation in 2020 led by Illuminate. This upgrade included a new stage and state-of-the-art theatrical lighting and a Meyer Sound system, a top-tier audio technology that an engineer can appreciate. The venue, originally called the Spreckels Temple of Music, was a gift to the city from sugar magnate Claus Spreckels in 1900. The Illuminate LIVE series was initially launched as part of Golden Gate Park's 150th anniversary celebration and has continued due to its popularity, now entering its sixth season. The series will feature over 125 free performances, running through mid-November with shows typically on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The diverse lineup of music, spanning genres like R&B, soul, jazz, funk, rock, and reggae, aims to provide an accessible arts experience for the San Francisco community. This commitment to free and accessible culture provides a valuable outlet and contributes to the work-life balance for those in the city's demanding tech industry. The series is made possible through private support and grants, with no charge to the public.
