Google shifts search toward tasks

- Google has been remaking Search around AI Mode and AI Overviews, turning more queries into conversations and guided actions instead of a page of blue links. - The clearest shift came with task features: AI Mode can now find restaurant reservations, with Google saying it will expand next to services and tickets. - Google says AI features lift usage and keep links visible, while publishers brace for traffic changes. Google is pushing Search beyond finding information and toward completing tasks inside Google’s own interface. (blog.google) The change started in March 2025, when Google introduced AI Mode as a Search Labs experiment alongside a Gemini 2.0 upgrade for AI Overviews. AI Mode was built for longer, multi-part questions and follow-up prompts. (blog.google) At Google I/O in May 2025, the company moved AI Mode into mainstream Search in the United States, without requiring a Labs sign-up. Google said the product uses a “query fan-out” system that runs multiple related searches at once and combines the results. (blog.google) That architecture lets Search behave less like an index and more like an assistant. Instead of returning one list of links, it can break a request into subproblems, gather live web results, shopping data and Knowledge Graph facts, and assemble an answer. (blog.google 1) (blog.google 2) Google’s own design team described 2025 as the first year Search rolled out a “completely redesigned interface” for complex questions and follow-ups. Internal research found some users were already trying to trigger more AI responses because they wanted the experience to be more predictable. (blog.google) The product kept moving from answers toward actions. In August 2025, Google added “agentic capabilities” to AI Mode for Google AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S., starting with restaurant reservations and planning expansions to local services and event tickets. (blog.google) Google said that feature searches reservation platforms and websites in real time, then shows available options and links users to the final booking page. The company named OpenTable, Resy, Tock, Ticketmaster, StubHub, SeatGeek and Booksy as partners. (blog.google) In January 2026, Google tightened the loop again by making Gemini 3 the default model for AI Overviews globally and letting users jump directly from an overview into an AI Mode conversation. Google described that as “one fluid experience” for quick answers or deeper exploration. (blog.google) Google says the new approach is increasing usage. At I/O 2025, it said AI Overviews were driving more than a 10% increase in Google usage for the kinds of queries that show AI Overviews in markets including the U.S. and India. (blog.google) The company is also trying to calm publishers and marketers worried about lost traffic. In August 2025, Google said total organic click volume to websites was “relatively stable year-over-year,” while “quality clicks” had increased because users who do click are less likely to bounce back. (blog.google) Google’s latest Chrome integration shows where this is heading. In April 2026, it began opening clicked pages side-by-side with AI Mode on desktop, so users can compare sites and keep asking follow-ups without leaving the Search workflow. (blog.google) The through line is that Google no longer presents Search as a place to start a task. It is building Search to do more of the task before you ever leave.
