Belgium Seizes Russian 'Shadow Fleet' Tanker

Belgium, with French naval support, has seized a Russian oil tanker in the North Sea. The vessel is suspected of being part of Russia's "shadow fleet," used to circumvent Western sanctions on its energy exports. The operation signals a tougher European enforcement stance.

The seized vessel, identified as the *Ethera*, was boarded by Belgian special forces in an overnight operation codenamed "Operation Blue Intruder" within Belgium's exclusive economic zone in the North Sea. The 180-meter tanker, built in 2008, was sailing under a false Guinean flag and was escorted to the port of Zeebrugge. Authorities are conducting a criminal investigation after discovering suspected false documents on board. The ship's captain, a Russian national, is currently being questioned by investigators. The *Ethera* was already on both European Union and United States sanctions lists before its capture. This operation signals a more aggressive enforcement of sanctions at sea, with French President Emmanuel Macron calling it a "major blow" to the shadow fleet. It follows other recent interceptions, including a French seizure of a tanker named *Grinch* in January and previous actions by the United States. The "shadow fleet" consists of a sprawling network of aging tankers with opaque ownership, often poorly insured, used to transport Russian oil to international markets like China and India, bypassing Western sanctions. Beyond sanctions evasion, these vessels are also suspected of involvement in sabotage and espionage as part of a "hybrid war" against Western nations. Interestingly, the U.S. Treasury Department has previously linked the *Ethera* to a maritime empire reportedly controlled by the son of a high-ranking Iranian official, highlighting the interconnected nature of sanctions evasion networks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the seizure, stating the vessel had "long been under US, EU, and UK sanctions, but nonetheless continued to illegally transport Russian oil using a false flag and forged documents." The use of these older, often poorly maintained vessels poses significant environmental risks, with concerns about potential oil spills, mechanical failures, and leaks in critical waterways. Russia has previously condemned the seizure of its tankers as acts of "piracy."
