Rumor: High-End AirPods Pro to Get Apple Intelligence

Apple is reportedly planning to bring its 'Apple Intelligence' capabilities to a new, higher-end version of the AirPods Pro later this year. The move would deeply embed AI-powered voice analytics, context awareness, and location intelligence into one of its most popular wearable devices.

This rumored premium model may be a higher-end variant of the AirPods Pro 3, not a full fourth-generation release. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the key hardware upgrade could be the inclusion of tiny infrared cameras, a first for Apple's earbud lineup. These cameras are expected to power "Visual Intelligence," a feature that would allow the AirPods to identify objects and provide contextual information about the user's surroundings. This aligns with the Visual Intelligence feature Apple has already rolled out on the iPhone, which can identify text, landmarks, and objects through the camera. The new camera hardware is also rumored to enable in-air gesture controls. This could potentially allow users to control playback or interact with Siri without physically touching the AirPods or a paired device. Such features would require significant on-device processing, building on the capabilities of Apple's existing H2 chip. The H2 processor currently enables computational audio features like Adaptive Transparency by sampling environmental noise 48,000 times per second. Apple Intelligence prioritizes privacy by using on-device processing and a system called Private Cloud Compute for more complex tasks, ensuring user data is not stored or analyzed by Apple. This framework would likely extend to any data processed by the new AirPods, from voice commands to visual information. The move follows a trend of packing more sensors into the Pro earbuds. The AirPods Pro 3, released in September 2025, already incorporated a heart rate sensor for workout tracking and introduced live language translation capabilities. Competitors in the broader hearables market are also integrating dedicated AI processors. Brands like Phonak and ReSound use multi-chip systems to handle tasks like real-time speech enhancement and environmental sound classification in their advanced hearing aids. If the rumors prove true, Apple could offer two tiers of AirPods Pro 3 simultaneously, with the camera-equipped "Apple Intelligence" model potentially priced between $299 and $349.
