DC Gets Greek Yogurt Battle
"Go Greek Authentic Yogurteria" is opening its first DC location in Georgetown, sparking friendly rivalry between Greek yogurt and Greek ice cream fans. Expect a menu packed with Instagrammable parfaits and creamy, Mediterranean-inspired treats in the competitive frozen dessert scene.
Go Greek Yogurteria, founded in 2012 by David Subotic, Tanja Subotic, and Jonathan Williams Margaritakis, first brought its authentic, probiotic-packed Greek yogurt to Beverly Hills. The company, which sources and imports ingredients directly from Europe, has since expanded to other locations in California and internationally, with a mission to promote a healthy Mediterranean lifestyle. The new Georgetown storefront at 1363 Wisconsin Ave, NW, will be housed in the former location of the fashion retailer HomeCourt. The menu will feature both "Fresko," a fresh yogurt used in parfaits, and "Kryo," a self-serve frozen yogurt. Staple frozen yogurt flavors include Plain Tart, Greek Honey, and Chocolate, alongside rotating seasonal options. Go Greek enters a neighborhood with a growing Hellenic culinary scene. It will be down the street from Greco, a fast-casual modern Greek restaurant, adding to the area's Mediterranean flavor. This trend reflects a broader consumer interest in the health benefits and vibrant tastes of Greek cuisine. The friendly rivalry is with Yala Greek Ice Cream, which opened on N Street in the summer of 2025. Yala's co-founder, Chrys Kefalas, aims to revolutionize ice cream in the same way Greek yogurt transformed the yogurt market, focusing on a light, creamy texture and unique Mediterranean flavors like "Kataifi" (baklava) and "Yia Mas" (Greek yogurt with wild cherries). This local competition is set against the backdrop of a booming U.S. frozen dessert market, which was valued at over $35 billion in 2024. The industry is seeing a significant shift toward healthier and premium options, with the frozen yogurt segment projected to have the fastest growth rate as health-conscious consumers seek out alternatives to traditional ice cream.
