Fabric Foundation Launches for Open-Source Robotics

A new initiative called the Fabric Foundation has launched to build an open-source ecosystem for robotics and AGI. The foundation announced a partnership with NVIDIA and Unitree to develop AI 'brains' for robots, aiming to power a decentralized robot economy with its own '$ROBO' token.

The Fabric Foundation's mission is to create open-source governance and economic infrastructure to ensure intelligent machines are aligned with human interests and benefit society broadly. The independent non-profit focuses on developing systems for machine and human identity, decentralized task allocation, and secure machine-to-machine communication. The partnership will leverage NVIDIA's full-stack robotics technology, which Unitree is deploying on its new R1 humanoid robot. Unitree utilizes NVIDIA's Isaac Sim for high-fidelity simulation to optimize the robot's movement and control, while Isaac Lab helps in rapid strategy iteration. This collaboration was highlighted at the 2025 World Robot Conference, where executives from both companies appeared together. Unitree is a significant player in the commercialization of humanoid robots, having shipped an estimated 4,200 units in 2025, second only to AgiBot. The company is known for its rapid iteration and has been actively open-sourcing embodied AI models and datasets, including those for its G1 humanoid robot's dexterous hand and gripper manipulation. The '$ROBO' token is the native utility and governance token for the Fabric Protocol, designed to power a decentralized robotics network. With a fixed total supply of 10 billion tokens, it's used for network fees, staking by node operators, and governance. The protocol aims to solve the risk of a "winner-takes-all" scenario in robotics and create on-chain identities and payment systems for robots. This initiative enters a field where open-source frameworks like the Robot Operating System (ROS) have historically been central. However, the ecosystem is evolving with a greater focus on Python-centric frameworks and learning-based robotics software like LeRobot, which is integrating NVIDIA's Isaac technologies in collaboration with Hugging Face. The broader context is the rapid advancement of "agentic AI," where AI systems can autonomously perceive their environment, reason, plan, and act to achieve goals. This shift is moving robots from executing pre-programmed tasks to becoming adaptive partners that can handle unexpected situations, a key technological underpinning for initiatives like the Fabric Foundation.
