Vaporwave emerged in the early 2010s as an ironic offshoot of chillwave, drawing from hypnagogic pop and retro-revivalist motifs. Producers like James Ferraro, Daniel Lopatin, and Ramona Xavier pioneered the style, using online pseudonyms. Lopatin's "Chuck Person's Eccojams Vol. 1" (2010) and Ferraro's "Far Side Virtual" (2011) are considered key early works. The genre gained traction on platforms like Turntable.fm, Bandcamp, SoundCloud, Tumblr, Last.fm, 4chan, and YouTube. Vaporwave is characterized by slowed-down, chopped, and screwed samples of smooth jazz, elevator music, R&B, and lounge music from the 1980s and 1990s. It often carries a satirical or ambiguous take on consumer capitalism and pop culture. Visually, vaporwave incorporates 1990s web design, glitch art, anime, and Roman sculptures. Memphis Design geometric shapes, 3D-rendered objects, and cyberpunk tropes are also common. The aesthetic draws inspiration from the Memphis Design Group, founded by Ettore Sottsass in Milan in 1980. AI tools now generate vaporwave art, creating nostalgic visuals with pink and blue gradients, retro technology, and Roman statues. These tools allow users to create images embodying vaporwave's critique of consumer culture. AI algorithms learn from existing vaporwave art to generate new pieces with a nostalgic flair. Despite being declared "dead" in the mid-2010s, vaporwave continues to influence design and music. Its resurgence taps into nostalgia for a pre-2010s internet and evokes a sense of "compensatory nostalgia" for an idealistic future portrayed in 90s media. The style blends retro, techno, and futuristic elements. Vaporwave design often combines VHS tapes, 16-bit gaming graphics, pixelated text, and old logos. Other common elements include video glitches, cyberpunk themes, and Japanese characters. A distinctive color palette of pastels and bright neons is also typical.
