The Nike Air Force 1, designed by Bruce Kilgore, debuted in 1982 as the first basketball shoe featuring Nike's Air technology. Kilgore, drawing inspiration from Nike hiking boots, aimed for mobility and stability. The name pays homage to Air Force One, the U.S. presidential aircraft, lending the shoe an exclusive feel. Initially a high-top, the Air Force 1 Low arrived in 1983, becoming the most popular version. Nike briefly discontinued the line in 1984 before re-releasing it in 1986 with an updated logo. The AF1 gained traction in Harlem, New York, earning the nickname "Uptowns". The upcoming Vibram x Nike AF1 Low LX "White" integrates a Vibram sole for enhanced grip and durability. A Gore-Tex lining ensures all-weather performance, with "AF1" and "GORE-TEX" etched on the dubrae. The design maintains the classic AF1 look while adding rugged functionality. Nike has a history of Air Force 1 collaborations, including those with Off-White, Travis Scott, and Tiffany & Co. In 2007, the Air Force 1 Low Anaconda Lux, made in Italy from crocodile and anaconda leather, retailed for $2,000. Nike sells approximately 12 million pairs of Air Force 1s annually, generating over $800 million in sales.
