India Launches First Amphibious Drone

India has launched "Avataar," its first amphibious drone capable of both air and underwater operations. Developed by Bengaluru-based AquaAirX, the drone is designed to enhance naval surveillance and represents a step forward in multi-domain autonomous systems.

The "Avataar" drone has achieved Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL 6), signifying that its fully operational prototype has been successfully validated in real-world environments, including open water. This moves the platform beyond a laboratory concept and closer to full-scale production and deployment. The project is backed by ₹12.5 crore in seed funding, led by Rainmatter, the investment arm of fintech company Zerodha. To operate in harsh marine conditions, the drone's design incorporates a three-layer defense system. Its body is constructed from a carbon fiber composite that is resistant to saltwater corrosion. Additionally, specialized coatings protect its sensors from salt and other debris, and a mandatory freshwater flush is performed after each mission to remove any corrosive residues. Underwater navigation and perception are achieved without relying on traditional cameras, which are ineffective in murky water. Instead, Avataar employs a sonar-like system, emitting sound pulses and analyzing the returning echoes to create a 3D map of its surroundings. To counteract ocean currents, it uses an advanced speedometer that measures its movement relative to the sea floor, ensuring precise location tracking. Communication between the drone and its base station while submerged is handled through acoustic pulses, functioning like an underwater Wi-Fi system to transmit data. This allows the drone to perform complex autonomous tasks without a physical tether. The combination of a quadcopter's aerial agility and a submarine's pressure-resistant structure enables seamless transitions between air and sea for comprehensive situational awareness. The development of Avataar aligns with India's broader strategy of advancing its indigenous drone capabilities for defense and security. Other significant projects include the "Ghatak" stealth combat drone, a flying-wing design for deep-strike missions, and "Project KAL," a long-range attack drone. This push is part of a larger effort to modernize the military with advanced autonomous systems. The amphibious nature of Avataar addresses a critical need in maritime security, offering a single platform for both aerial surveillance and underwater inspection. Key applications include persistent monitoring of harbors, inspecting subsea pipelines and cables for the offshore energy sector, and conducting rapid search and rescue operations in complex marine environments.
