Uganda Charity Run Launches at Hospital Site

Uganda's Cancer Run 2026 charity event was launched at the construction site of a new bunker at Nsambya Hospital. The country's Speaker of Parliament inspected the government-funded project's progress during the launch, highlighting the intersection of public health initiatives and healthcare construction.

The annual Cancer Run, organized by the Rotary Cancer Program Uganda since 2016, has a history of tangible results; it previously funded the construction of a 36-bed cancer treatment ward which is now operational at Nsambya Hospital. The event is a key fundraiser for the ongoing development of what is intended to be the first fully-equipped, comprehensive cancer center in the country. The new bunker construction is budgeted at approximately USh4 billion (around $1.1 million USD) and is specifically designed to house two linear accelerator machines. This will allow the Nsambya Hospital Cancer Center to offer radiotherapy services, a critical component of cancer treatment that is currently limited in Uganda. This expansion addresses a critical healthcare gap. Cancer is one of the top five causes of death in Uganda. The country's primary facility, the Uganda Cancer Institute, registered 36,000 new cancer cases in 2024 but could only provide treatment for just over 7,000 patients, highlighting severe issues of overcrowding and lack of access to care. The project at Nsambya is part of a broader boom in healthcare infrastructure across East Africa. Driven by population growth and a rising disease burden, the region is seeing significant investment in new facilities. The medical devices market in Eastern Africa alone is projected to grow by nearly 8% annually, reaching a market volume of US$1.82 billion in 2028. For business graduates, a business management degree provides a strong foundation for entering the construction management field. Skills in financial management, project management, strategic planning, and budgeting are highly transferable and sought after by construction firms for roles like Assistant Project Manager, Project Engineer, and Management Trainee.
