Daryl Mitchell Wins ICC Honor
New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell was named ICC Men's Player of the Month for January 2026, recognized for his stunning batting displays against India. Mitchell's form has been crucial in New Zealand's progression to the T20 World Cup semifinals. His performances cement his status as a key all-rounder on the global stage.
To claim the January honor, Mitchell beat out fellow nominees Joe Root of England and India's Suryakumar Yadav. Root was recognized for a match-winning ODI series against Sri Lanka, while Yadav returned to form with a blistering T20I series against New Zealand. Mitchell's award was secured through a dominant performance in the three-match ODI series in India, where he amassed 352 runs at an incredible average of 176. His efforts led the Black Caps to a 2-1 series victory, their first-ever ODI series win on Indian soil. The performance set a new record for the most runs scored by a batsman in a three-match ODI series against India. Mitchell's heroics included an unbeaten 131 in the second match to level the series, followed by a decisive 137 in the final game. This run of form also propelled the 34-year-old to the top of the ICC's ODI batting rankings. Mitchell has consistently been a thorn in India's side, averaging over 74 against them in his ODI career with four centuries. His impressive month wasn't limited to one format. In the subsequent five-match T20I series against India, Mitchell scored 125 runs at a powerful strike rate of 186.56. New Zealand's advancement to the T20 World Cup semifinals marks their third appearance in the final four in the last four editions of the tournament. They secured their spot from the Super 8 stage after Pakistan failed to defeat Sri Lanka by a large enough margin to overtake the Kiwis' superior net run rate.
