Reyes Wants Another Shot

Dominick Reyes publicly said a win over Johnny Walker at UFC 327 would position him for a second light‑heavyweight title shot, signaling he sees this undercard bout as a direct route back into title contention. (nationaltoday.com)

Dominick Reyes is treating a non-title fight like a title eliminator. At UFC 327 in Miami on April 11, 2026, the former light heavyweight title challenger faces Johnny Walker and has said a win should put him back in line for the belt. (nationaltoday.com) That claim sounds bold until you look at the timing. UFC 327 is already built around a vacant light heavyweight championship fight between Jiří Procházka and Carlos Ulberg, so the division is about to get a new champion the same night Reyes fights on the same card. (ufc.com, espn.com) The belt is vacant because Alex Pereira gave it up, which reset the line at 205 pounds. When a title is vacant, the next few matchups matter more because the division has no settled pecking order behind the new champion. (espn.com) Reyes has been in this spot before. He fought Jon Jones for the light heavyweight championship at UFC 247 on February 8, 2020, lost by unanimous decision, and many fans still remember that fight as the night he came closest to taking the belt from Jones. (espn.com) Then his career fell off hard. Reyes lost title fights to Jan Błachowicz in September 2020 and Jiří Procházka in May 2022, and his 2022 loss to Ryan Spann made it four straight defeats in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. (espn.com) Johnny Walker is the kind of opponent who can change a ranking with one exchange. The Brazilian light heavyweight built his name on chaotic knockouts, and the UFC has this bout listed as No. 10 Reyes against No. 12 Walker, which puts both men close enough to the top 10 that one win can move them fast. (ufc.com) Reyes also is not coming in on a hot streak. MMA Junkie reported when the fight was booked on January 29, 2026 that he was trying to rebound from a first-round knockout loss to Carlos Ulberg at UFC Fight Night 260 in September 2025. (mmajunkie.usatoday.com) That Ulberg loss matters twice. It hurt Reyes’s position, and it came against the same Carlos Ulberg who now fights Procházka for the vacant title, so Reyes is only one strong performance away from being able to say he has recent history with one half of the championship matchup. (mmajunkie.usatoday.com, ufc.com) The UFC’s own 2026 division preview, published three months ago, still framed the title picture around Alex Pereira, Jiří Procházka, Carlos Ulberg, and Magomed Ankalaev, while naming Khalil Rountree Jr. and Azamat Murzakanov as names to watch. Reyes was not in that top cluster. (ufc.com) So Reyes is really asking for two things at once. He needs to beat Walker on a card where the title is decided, and he needs that win to be convincing enough that matchmakers jump him over fighters the UFC has talked about more recently. (ufc.com, ufc.com) That is why this undercard fight is bigger than it looks on paper. Reyes is 36 years old, his last title shot was more than five years ago, and UFC 327 gives him the rare chance to fight on the exact night a new champion is crowned and make his pitch while the division is still being rearranged.
