AI Transforms Medical Training at University of Arizona

The University of Arizona's Virtual Outpatient Clinic, launched in fall 2025, is using AI to train medical students in a risk-free environment. The platform supports simulations with 26 virtual patients across more than 90 languages, allowing students to practice empathy and navigate difficult conversations.

- The project is a collaboration between the University of Arizona's Center for Transformative Interprofessional Healthcare (CTIPH), UITS iDX, and Campus Web Services (CWC). The idea for the clinic originated with Margie Arnett, director of CTIPH, after she attended a national symposium. - A key focus of the AI-powered clinic is to develop "affective computing," which enables systems to recognize, interpret, and simulate human emotions, allowing students to practice empathy in a controlled environment. The platform provides automated, formative feedback on metrics like empathy, rapport-building, and interprofessional awareness. - The technology behind the clinic was intentionally trained with healthcare-specific data and frameworks, such as the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) competencies, to ensure the AI assistant provides realistic and reliable responses. - The University of Arizona offers the Virtual Outpatient Clinic as a free resource to students globally, aiming to provide access to this technology for those in other countries who may not have the resources to develop it themselves. - A multi-institutional research study is planned for spring 2026 to explore students' perceptions, satisfaction, and performance when using the AI clinic to develop communication skills. - This initiative is part of a broader trend in medical education to incorporate AI, with a 2024 survey finding that over 75% of medical students reported having no formal AI education in their curriculum, highlighting a critical gap. - The University of Arizona has established a university-wide AI community to foster discussions on access and ethical use, and has appointed a Chief AI and Data Science Officer to lead the strategic integration of artificial intelligence. - The broader AI in healthcare initiative at the University of Arizona aims to accelerate biomedical research, advance AI-driven drug discovery, and expand healthcare access to rural areas.
