USC Football Hires New Defensive Coordinator

USC has named former TCU head coach Gary Patterson as its new defensive coordinator. The move brings a highly respected, blue-chip coach to the Trojans' staff to lead the defense.

Gary Patterson's most recent on-field impact came in an off-field role at Texas in 2022. As a special assistant, he helped a defense that was ranked 99th nationally in points allowed per game in 2021 (31.1) jump to 29th in 2022 (21.2). The hire addresses a critical failure point for head coach Lincoln Riley. Under a previous coordinator in 2023, USC's defense ranked 121st in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 34.4 points per game, and 119th in total defense, giving up over 432 yards per contest. Patterson replaces D'Anton Lynn, who left for Penn State after a two-season tenure. The move marks the third defensive coordinator Riley has hired in his time at USC, signaling a high-pressure environment to fix the unit. Patterson was the head coach at TCU for 21 seasons, becoming the winningest coach in school history with a 181-79 record. His teams were known for their defensive prowess, finishing No. 1 nationally in total defense five times during his tenure. This marks Patterson's return to a full-time defensive coordinator role for the first time since serving in the same position at TCU from 1998-2000. He built his reputation on an aggressive 4-2-5 scheme, a system that matches USC's current defensive personnel. The hire comes just after Patterson was named to the 2026 College Football Hall of Fame class, cementing his status as one of the most respected defensive minds in the sport's recent history.
