Slack Unveils AI-Powered Workflow Platform

Slack just announced a major evolution of its platform, pushing deeper into agentic AI and workflow automation. The update emphasizes "AI-powered, no-code workflow design," letting non-technical users orchestrate processes across HR, comp, and finance tools. The roadmap points to proactive AI assistants that manage and resolve tasks, not just respond to prompts.

This evolution positions Slack as a "conversational interface for the agentic enterprise," a vision articulated by CPO and interim CEO Rob Seaman. The goal is to create a central operating system where users can orchestrate work across all their applications directly from Slack, minimizing context switching. This strategy leans into the idea of AI agents not just responding to prompts, but proactively managing and resolving tasks. The new capabilities are built on the next-generation Slack platform, which provides developers with tools to create custom, AI-powered apps hosted within Slack. Key to this is a real-time search API and a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, designed to give AI agents secure access to the conversational data within Slack to better understand context and execute tasks. Underpinning the user-facing features is an improved, no-code Workflow Builder. This tool allows users to connect apps like Google Workspace, Asana, and Salesforce to automate multi-step processes with simple natural language prompts, such as "welcome new members to #onboarding and ask them to introduce themselves." The platform's AI features, which are now included in all paid plans, are designed to save users significant time. An internal analysis of pilot customers indicated that Slack AI saves the average user 97 minutes per week. Features like one-click conversation summaries and AI-powered search are intended to streamline information discovery and reduce time spent catching up. This AI push is a key part of the strategy driven by CEO Denise Dresser, who took the helm after Lidiane Jones's year-long tenure. Dresser has emphasized building AI into the platform in a way that is intuitive and requires little to no training, following the product principle of "don't make me think." Slack's strategy also involves an open ecosystem, integrating with a variety of AI players. The company is partnering with firms like Anthropic, Perplexity, and Notion, allowing their AI agents to be accessed and utilized directly within the Slack interface. This contrasts with the more ecosystem-centric approach of competitors like Microsoft Teams.
