Orangetheory Fitness to Expand in Japan
Orangetheory Japan has signed a 10-year renewal agreement to expand its presence to 100 fitness studios. The expansion reflects continued global demand for technology-integrated fitness experiences.
The Japan expansion is a continuation of a strategy that began in 2016, when Orangetheory first signed a master franchise agreement with the goal of opening 70 studios. This new 10-year plan, driven by regional master franchisor Orangetheory Japan Co., Ltd., a part of ITS Co., Ltd., aims to add 86 new locations by 2034, bringing the total to over 100. The company's global growth is built on a scalable technology platform that processes massive amounts of data from its members' IoT heart rate monitors. Each one-hour class generates over 54,000 data points per member, and at peak times, the system handles up to 100,000 data points per second across its 1,500+ worldwide locations. Orangetheory's backend leverages a serverless architecture on AWS, using services like AWS Lambda for scalable compute. This allows their engineering teams to focus on application development rather than infrastructure management, a key strategy for rapid international scaling. The architecture is designed for resilience, with local in-studio machines that can operate independently of the main backend to ensure classes can run without constant connectivity. Real-time data streaming and processing are central to the user experience. The company utilizes Amazon Kinesis to ingest second-by-second telemetry from wearables, which is then fed into an S3-based data lake. For analytics and business intelligence, they employ Snowflake, enabling teams from finance to engineering to make data-driven decisions. For its member-facing applications, including the OrangetheoryAtHome virtual workout platform, the company uses AWS Amplify. This framework simplifies the development of secure, scalable full-stack applications for mobile and web. To handle live and on-demand video streaming, they integrate the Amazon Chime SDK and use Amazon CloudFront for low-latency global content delivery. The expansion in Japan is part of a larger global strategy. Orangetheory is also targeting aggressive growth in Europe and other regions, with a long-term goal of reaching 10,000 studios worldwide. This growth is concurrent with a recent merger with Self Esteem Brands, the parent company of Anytime Fitness, forming a new entity called Purpose Brands which boasts over 7,000 locations globally.
