BYD Reveals New Battery Tech Amid China Slowdown
Chinese EV giant BYD has revealed advanced batteries, faster charging capabilities, and new models. The product offensive is aimed at stimulating growth and capturing market share as China's domestic auto market shows signs of slowing.
The new second-generation Blade Battery boasts the ability to charge from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes. This is enabled by new "Flash Chargers" capable of delivering up to 1,500 kW of power. The lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery also features a 5% increase in energy density, contributing to longer vehicle ranges. This technological push comes as BYD faces a significant sales downturn in early 2026, with sales dropping in January and February amid a broader cooling of China's electric vehicle market. The slowdown follows a period of intense price wars, which BYD itself participated in throughout 2025, and changes in government subsidies. This has created a more challenging and competitive domestic landscape for the EV giant. The company's response includes the launch of new models equipped with the second-generation Blade Battery, such as the Denza Z9 GT, which has a claimed range of over 1,000 kilometers. Another new model, the Seal 07 EV, will also feature this new battery technology. While navigating the domestic slowdown, BYD is also aggressively expanding its presence in international markets. The company has seen significant sales growth in Europe and is targeting further expansion there and in other regions. This global push is a key part of its strategy to offset the increased competition and market saturation at home.
