Hamilton Gets First Relaxed Performance
Hamilton will host its first Relaxed Performance on April 29 at Victoria Palace Theatre, with adjusted sound/lighting and trained staff, tickets starting at £25. Delfont Mackintosh's inclusive show aims to accommodate audience members with autism, ADHD, and other sensory needs — major step for West End accessibility.
Relaxed performances are not a new concept for the West End, but adapting a show with the sensory intensity of *Hamilton* presents a unique undertaking. The production is almost entirely "sung-through," meaning it has continuous music and sound, including loud effects like cannon booms and rifle shots, which will likely be softened for the relaxed performance. The lighting design, which features many quick changes and strobe effects, is also expected to be adjusted to be less jarring for individuals with sensory sensitivities. The April 29th performance is a collaboration with Go Live Theatre, a charity formerly known as Mousetrap Theatre Projects. This organization was instrumental in pioneering relaxed performances in the West End, staging the very first one for *Shrek the Musical* back in 2012. Since then, they have facilitated similar accessible performances for numerous other major shows, including *Wicked*, *Mamma Mia!*, and *The Lion King*. These performances are designed to create a welcoming and non-judgmental environment for people with autism, learning disabilities, or other sensory and communication needs. Beyond technical adjustments, the conventional rules of theatre etiquette are eased, allowing audience members to make noise and move around if they need to. The house lights are typically kept at a low level throughout the show, and designated "chill-out" areas are provided for anyone who feels overwhelmed. The initiative is part of a broader commitment to accessibility by theatre owner Delfont Mackintosh. The company already offers other access provisions, such as captioned and audio-described performances for various shows, including *Hamilton*. They also partner with the GalaPro app to provide closed captions and audio descriptions on personal mobile devices for every performance.
