Central Railway plans to start a second air-conditioned local on the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus–Panvel Harbour corridor by the end of April, after a new rake reached Mumbai for trials. (mid-day.com) The new 12-car electric multiple unit arrived in Central Railway’s Mumbai division in the week of April 6 and is now undergoing testing before commercial use, Mid-day reported on April 11. Railway officials told the paper the service is expected to begin by April 30 if the trials are cleared. (mid-day.com) The route matters because Central Railway had already brought back air-conditioned Harbour Line service on January 26, 2026, with 14 daily trips between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Panvel, seven in each direction. Those January services replaced existing non-air-conditioned trains rather than adding to the total suburban schedule. (timesofindia.indiatimes.com) With those 14 Harbour Line trips, Central Railway’s air-conditioned suburban count rose to 94 services, including 80 on the main line and 14 on the Harbour line, while total daily suburban operations stayed at 1,820. A March 2026 Times of India report said the next rake was expected to push the system past 100 air-conditioned trips. (swarajyamag.com) (timesofindia.indiatimes.com) This is Central Railway’s second attempt to make premium Harbour Line commuting stick. The railway first introduced air-conditioned Harbour services in 2021 and withdrew them in May 2022 after low occupancy, replacing 16 Harbour Line air-conditioned trips with non-air-conditioned rakes. (mid-day.com) (freepressjournal.in) Railway officials later linked the revival plan to stronger demand on Central Railway’s main line air-conditioned trains, where earlier Harbour Line rakes had been shifted. Local reports in 2025 said that rebound in main-line ridership prompted Central Railway to reassess whether Navi Mumbai commuters would now use more paid premium capacity on the Harbour corridor. (freepressjournal.in) (lokmattimes.com) The new rake is also arriving as Mumbai’s suburban system prepares for more closed-door trains. Mid-day reported in the same April 11 story that a non-air-conditioned local with automatic doors, built by Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, is also headed to Mumbai after the Mumbra accident prompted a broader safety push. (mid-day.com) If the April rollout happens on schedule, Harbour Line riders will have two air-conditioned trainsets covering the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus–Panvel run by the end of this month instead of the single set now in use.
