Lincoln and Lancaster County residents have two free chances this week to drop off household hazardous waste at mobile collection events in Hickman and Lincoln. (lincoln.ne.gov) The first event is Friday, April 24, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Hickman Fire Station, 401 W. 7th St. in Hickman. The second is Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Star City Shores, 4375 S. 33rd Ct. in Lincoln. (1011now.com) The collections are run through HazToGo, Lincoln’s Hazardous Waste Center, and are open at no cost to residents of Lincoln and Lancaster County. The city said the mobile events are for unwanted household chemicals. (lincoln.ne.gov) Household hazardous waste is the category for products such as pesticides, cleaning products, oil-based paints and pool chemicals that need special handling instead of a regular trash cart. Lincoln’s Waste Management Section says its job includes preventing hazardous waste from being illegally disposed of in the Bluff Road Landfill. (1011now.com; lincoln.ne.gov) The program sits inside the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department’s Environmental Public Health Division, which says it works to reduce exposure to hazardous materials and protect human health and the environment. HazToGo is one part of that system, alongside enforcement and waste-management programs. (lincoln.ne.gov) Lincoln already runs a year-round hazardous waste site at 5101 N. 48th St., and the city has expanded access in recent years with mobile events and seasonal hour changes. A 2025 city notice said the center is a drive-through site open to Lincoln and Lancaster County residents at no cost. (lincoln.ne.gov; lincoln.ne.gov) The city has also said HazToGo diverts large volumes of waste from the landfill: about 130,000 pounds of household hazardous waste on average in 2022 and 2023, with roughly 3,500 households and small businesses participating each year. Those figures help explain why Lincoln keeps taking the program on the road. (lincoln.ne.gov) Residents who go this week should expect a drive-through setup and follow site instructions from the hazardous waste team. For questions, the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department lists HazToGo at 402-441-8021. (lincoln.ne.gov; lincoln.ne.gov)
