Manchester City Beats Newcastle

Manchester City advanced to the FA Cup quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over Newcastle United on March 7-8. Erling Haaland was rested to regain his "real pace" ahead of the Champions League clash with Real Madrid. Pep Guardiola now faces a two-game touchline ban after receiving his sixth yellow card of the season.

The victory for Manchester City was orchestrated by a masterclass from Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush, who scored a brace to continue his remarkable record against Newcastle. Marmoush has now netted seven times in his last five appearances against the Magpies, with 50% of his total goals for City coming against them. Brazilian winger Savinho scored City's other goal, his first for the club, while Harvey Barnes had initially given Newcastle an early lead. This FA Cup tie was the fifth time the two clubs have met this season, with Manchester City now having won four of those encounters. The win came despite manager Pep Guardiola making 10 changes to his starting lineup from their previous match, demonstrating the depth of the squad. The heavily rotated team still managed to dominate possession and generate a significantly higher expected goals (xG) total. Guardiola’s two-game touchline ban will see him absent from the dugout for the upcoming Premier League fixture against West Ham and the subsequent FA Cup quarter-final. The suspension, however, does not apply to the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal, meaning he will be present for that showpiece event. For Newcastle, the defeat marks the end of their FA Cup campaign and another domestic cup exit at the hands of City, who also eliminated them from the EFL Cup semi-finals. Currently sitting 12th in the Premier League, their focus now shifts to a formidable challenge in the UEFA Champions League, where they are set to face Barcelona in the Round of 16.
