HL7 & HIMSS Promote Interoperability Agenda

HL7 International announced an upcoming ViVE 2026 session on the future of interoperability, standards, and AI, featuring speakers from Sutter Health. Separately, HIMSS stressed that interoperability is fundamental to connecting patients to the right care at the right time.

- The HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standard is a foundational element of modern health data exchange, utilizing web-based technologies like RESTful APIs to allow different systems to share information. This modular approach, which defines data elements as "resources," simplifies the integration of electronic health records (EHRs) with other applications, such as patient-facing apps and AI-driven tools. - For an ICU nurse transitioning to informatics, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) offers the Nursing Informatics Certification (NI-BC). Eligibility typically requires a BSN, two years of RN experience, 30 hours of informatics-related continuing education, and a minimum of 2,000 hours of practice in informatics nursing within the last three years. - Critical care experience is highly valuable in health IT because it provides a deep understanding of clinical workflows, high-stakes decision-making, and the complexities of patient data in acute care settings. This background is sought after for roles like Clinical Informaticist and Healthcare Data Analyst. - In the ICU, AI-driven clinical decision support systems are being developed to analyze vast amounts of patient data to predict adverse events like sepsis and organ failure. These tools can also help streamline tasks such as managing ventilator settings and medication dosing by integrating real-time data. - Common frustrations with EHRs among ICU nurses include redundant data entry, poor workflow navigation, and excessive "click fatigue," which detract from direct patient care. A 2024 report indicated that 17% of nurses cited inefficient EHR workflow as a contributor to burnout, with 68% noting slow system response times as a major issue. - Federal regulations from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) mandate the use of standardized APIs to promote data exchange and prevent "information blocking". These rules are intended to give patients greater access to their health information and drive broader interoperability among providers and payers. - For a nurse at a hospital using Epic, EHR optimization strategies are key to improving workflows. This can involve streamlining documentation templates, particularly flowsheets, which has been shown to reduce documentation time significantly. Epic offers specific training, like the Nurse SmartUser program, to help nurses enhance their efficiency with the system.
