India Announces Major AI Infrastructure Push
Reliance Industries has announced a $110 billion commitment to AI infrastructure, including sovereign compute networks and green-powered data centers. In a related move, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) secured a partnership with OpenAI. The initiatives are designed to establish a domestic advantage for India in the global AI race and ensure access to affordable AI services.
- The $110 billion investment by Reliance Industries is planned over the next seven years and was announced by Chairman Mukesh Ambani at a global AI summit in New Delhi. The company aims to address the high cost and scarcity of computing power, which Ambani identified as the biggest constraint in AI development. - Reliance is constructing a multi-gigawatt, AI-ready data center park in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with the first phase of over 120 megawatts of capacity expected to be online by the end of 2026. This initiative will be powered by up to 10 gigawatts of renewable energy from the company's solar projects in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. - The partnership between Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and OpenAI will provide thousands of Tata Group employees with access to Enterprise ChatGPT and will leverage OpenAI's Codex to improve software engineering. The collaboration also focuses on creating AI solutions for various industries and includes joint go-to-market strategies. - As part of the TCS-OpenAI deal, TCS's HyperVault unit will develop AI infrastructure in India, starting with 100 megawatts and the option to scale up to 1 gigawatt to handle next-generation AI workloads. - This announcement is part of a larger trend of significant AI investment in India, including a $100 billion commitment from the Adani Group to build renewable-powered AI data centers by 2035. These moves align with the Indian government's goal to attract up to $200 billion in data center investments. - The OpenAI Foundation and TCS will also collaborate on social impact initiatives, aiming to provide AI training and resources to at least one million young people in India to improve their livelihoods. - Nvidia is also expanding its presence in India, partnering with companies like Larsen & Toubro to build a gigawatt-scale network of AI data centers and deploying tens of thousands of its Blackwell GPUs to support the government's IndiaAI Mission.
