Panda Express Goes Nuclear
Panda Express launched Blazing Bourbon Chicken, their spiciest dish ever, featuring crispy chicken and veggies in a bourbon and Hot Ones Last Dab Apollo hot sauce blend. The new menu item represents a major heat upgrade for the typically mild fast-casual chain.
The collaboration with "Hot Ones" marks a strategic move for Panda Express, aiming to tap into a younger demographic and the social media buzz generated by the popular YouTube talk show. The partnership introduces a level of heat intensity previously unseen on the chain's menu, creating a novelty item designed to drive both foot traffic and online conversation. At the heart of the Blazing Bourbon Chicken is Hot Ones' The Last Dab: Apollo hot sauce. The Apollo pepper, a crossbreed of the Carolina Reaper and Pepper X, was developed by renowned chili breeder Ed Currie. This specific pepper boasts a Scoville rating that can exceed 2.5 million units, although the sauce in the dish is diluted for broader appeal. This isn't the first time Panda Express has experimented with spicier offerings. The chain previously released a Hot Orange Chicken and Firecracker Shrimp as limited-time offers. These items are part of a larger strategy to introduce bolder flavors and cater to a growing consumer demand for spicy food. Before its nationwide debut, the Blazing Bourbon Chicken underwent a regional market test in 50 of Panda Express's 2,300 locations. The successful trial run in states like Arizona, California, and New York from 2023 to early 2024 prompted the company to make it available to a wider audience.
