Fatal Shooting in Fort Washington
A man was fatally shot at a shopping center in Fort Washington, Maryland, prompting a homicide investigation. Prince George's County police are currently searching for suspects and seeking information from the public.
The fatal shooting occurred around 2:35 a.m. on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at the Hunters Mill Center on Livingston Road. Police identified the victim as 31-year-old Tyrone Gantt of Washington, D.C. Investigators are still working to identify a suspect or suspects and determine a motive for the killing. This incident contrasts with a broader trend of decreasing violence in the county. By the end of 2025, Prince George's County had recorded a 41% decrease in homicides compared to the previous year, dropping from 99 to 58. Overall violent crime was also down 21% during the same period. Public safety remains a key issue for the local business community. In late 2024, the Prince George's County Council considered a "Late Night Safety Plan" bill, which would require businesses open between midnight and 4 a.m. to implement security measures such as extra lighting, surveillance cameras, and approved safety plans. The shooting took place in a commercial corridor that has been a focus of recent economic investment. The Prince George's County Economic Development Corporation previously provided a $2 million loan to redevelop the nearby Livingston Square Shopping Center, a $26 million project expected to create over 90 new full-time jobs. Recent business additions to the Fort Washington area include a new Aldi supermarket, which was planned for a Q1 2023 opening. Additionally, a nearly 43,000-square-foot Giant Food was extensively remodeled on Livingston Road, employing over 180 people. Looking ahead, significant healthcare investment is planned for the area. Adventist HealthCare is working to secure funding for a new Fort Washington Medical Center, an acute-care facility and outpatient medical building to be located at 7707 Kaydot Road.
