Music Streamer Qobuz Fights AI Tracks

High-resolution music service Qobuz is pushing back against AI-generated music. The Spotify rival is launching detection tools and emphasizing human curation to flag synthetic tracks, betting that listeners will value authenticity in an increasingly AI-driven content landscape.

Qobuz's move to flag AI-generated music, announced in February 2026, involves a proprietary detection system that analyzes its entire catalog for 100% AI-generated content. These tracks will receive a visible tag within the platform's applications in the coming months. This initiative is part of a broader "AI Charter" where the company commits to keeping its editorial and curation processes entirely human-led. All featured playlists, albums of the week, and other recommendations will continue to be selected by its staff, effectively excluding purely AI-generated tracks from prominent discovery sections. The company distinguishes between AI as a creative tool for human artists and "industrial production of AI-generated content," which it opposes. Fraudulent uploads, such as those impersonating artists or using bots to manipulate streaming numbers, will be removed, and any associated streams will be excluded from royalty calculations. This policy positions Qobuz alongside French counterpart Deezer, which has been a vocal critic of industrial-scale AI music. In January 2026, Deezer reported receiving about 60,000 AI-generated tracks daily and found that up to 85% of streams on this content were fraudulent. The industry's response to the flood of AI music varies. Spotify has also removed millions of "spammy" AI tracks and implemented policies against unauthorized AI voice clones, but it allows artists to voluntarily label their use of AI. Apple Music requires distributors to disclose AI involvement and can delist tracks that fail to do so. The economic stakes are high for human artists. A 2024 study cited by Qobuz projects that music creators could lose up to 24% of their revenue, amounting to roughly €10 billion, over five years due to the proliferation of AI-generated content.
