Blade Runner 2099 Returns

After a 9-year hiatus, the influential Blade Runner franchise is returning with *Blade Runner 2099* on Prime Video. The new series faces high expectations given the franchise's lasting impact on sci-fi visuals and philosophy, aiming to prove its continued relevance in today's genre landscape.

Original director Ridley Scott returns as an executive producer, with Silka Luisa (*Shining Girls*) serving as showrunner. Jonathan van Tulleken, who recently directed episodes of *Shōgun*, is directing the first two episodes of the new series. Production faced significant hurdles, including a location change. Originally set to film in Belfast, the 2023 WGA strike forced a move, with the series ultimately shooting in Prague, Czech Republic, and wrapping in late 2024. The series has a high bar for critical acclaim but a low one for commercial success. The original 1982 film was a box office disappointment, and its 2017 sequel, *Blade Runner 2049*, also flopped, grossing $267.5 million worldwide against a production budget of up to $185 million and an estimated $400 million break-even point. Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer lead the new cast. Yeoh will portray a replicant named Olwen who is nearing the end of her lifespan. The plot, set 50 years after the last film, reportedly follows a replicant on the run who is forced to partner with a Blade Runner to uncover a massive corporate conspiracy that threatens the future of Los Angeles. Actor Tom Burke, who has a role in the series, has stated the show's visual style will be "much closer to the aesthetic of the first movie than the second movie," returning to the more "Baroque, eclectic mix of cultures" from the 1982 original.
