Skoda Octavia vRS Gets Rave Reviews
The Skoda Octavia vRS is being hailed as potentially the most complete performance car on sale, with multiple outlets sharing glowing reviews of its hatchback prowess. The car is praised for balancing track-ready performance with practical everyday usability.
The "vRS" badge, standing for "victory Rally Sport," has a history rooted in Skoda's rally participation, with the first road-going vRS model, the Octavia vRS, launching in 2001. This initial model was equipped with a 1.8-litre turbocharged engine producing 178bhp, making it the most powerful production Skoda at the time. In the UK, the "v" was added to the "RS" (Rally Sport) badge to differentiate it from Ford's RS models. Now in its fourth generation, the latest Octavia vRS has seen a power increase in its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine to 262bhp. This allows the hatchback version to accelerate from 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds. A plug-in hybrid version, the vRS iV, is also available, marking the brand's first electrified performance car. Throughout its evolution, the Octavia vRS has often shared mechanical components with the Volkswagen Golf GTI of its respective era. The first generation utilized the same 1.8-litre turbocharged engine as the Golf GTI, while later versions were based on subsequent GTI platforms. However, the Octavia has consistently offered a more spacious and practical interior compared to its Volkswagen counterpart. The model's key competitors include the Volkswagen Golf GTI, Ford Focus ST, and Cupra Leon. While rivals like the Focus ST are praised for engaging handling, the Octavia vRS is often highlighted for its superior interior space and overall practicality, blending performance with everyday usability.
