Iran Escalates with Khorramshahr Missiles

Iran launched 'Khorramshahr' ballistic missiles in major escalation, while Hezbollah bombarded Israeli targets including Haifa. Iran also struck gas plants in Qatar and Saudi Arabia, expanding the conflict beyond Israel as Iran's Red Crescent reports over 550 deaths since the weekend.

The Khorramshahr is a liquid-fueled, medium-range ballistic missile, considered Iran's most advanced. Based on a North Korean design, it has a stated range of 2,000 km while carrying a heavy 1,500 kg warhead, though some variants with lighter payloads could potentially reach 3,000 km. The missile is named after a city heavily contested during the Iran-Iraq War. The latest version, the Khorramshahr-4 (or "Kheibar"), was unveiled in May 2023 and features an advanced engine and guidance systems, making it more difficult to intercept. Its large payload capacity has raised international concerns about its potential to carry nuclear warheads. Hezbollah, Iran's primary regional ally, is the world's most heavily armed non-state actor, possessing an arsenal of up to 200,000 rockets and missiles. This vast stockpile ranges from simple, unguided Katyusha rockets to more advanced, precision-guided missiles like the Fateh-110, capable of hitting strategic targets deep within Israel. The current exchange of fire breaks a ceasefire agreed to in November 2024, which had ended over a year of sustained conflict. Hezbollah has stated its recent bombardment, which broke the ceasefire, was in direct retaliation for the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a series of US-Israeli strikes over the weekend. The attacks on Qatari and Saudi gas facilities mark a deliberate expansion of the conflict to the wider Gulf region, targeting critical energy infrastructure. This move threatens global energy supplies, as it has already led to the shutdown of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for a fifth of the world's oil trade. The death toll reported by Iran's Red Crescent is primarily a result of the initial US-Israeli strikes inside Iran, which killed Ayatollah Khamenei and other senior officials. The widening conflict has also led to dozens of casualties in Lebanon from Israeli retaliatory strikes and a number of U.S. service members killed in Iranian attacks on bases in Kuwait.
