Adobe: editing vs. generation

Analysts argue Adobe’s structural position is in editing and workflow while model makers push raw generation, and Adobe also patched an Acrobat Reader zero‑day exploited in the wild this week. That combination frames Adobe as a company balancing feature competition with ongoing security and governance responsibilities. (markets.financialcontent.com) (helpnetsecurity.com)

Adobe is trying to win the artificial intelligence race inside the tools people already use, while also rushing to patch a critical Acrobat Reader flaw exploited in the wild on April 11. (adobe.com) Adobe’s security bulletin APSB26-43 says CVE-2026-34621 affects Acrobat and Reader on Windows and macOS and can lead to arbitrary code execution. The National Vulnerability Database lists affected versions as 24.001.30356 and 26.001.21367 and earlier. (helpx.adobe.com) (nvd.nist.gov) Adobe released the update on April 11, 2026, with priority level 1, its highest urgency tier for enterprise patching. Security researchers and trade outlets said the flaw had been exploited for months through malicious Portable Document Format files carrying JavaScript. (helpx.adobe.com) (bleepingcomputer.com) (sophos.com) At the same time, Adobe has been expanding Firefly, its generative artificial intelligence line, deeper into Creative Cloud rather than offering a standalone model business. At Adobe MAX London on April 24, 2025, the company introduced Firefly Image Model 4, Firefly Image Model 4 Ultra, general availability for Firefly Video Model, and Firefly Boards in public beta. (news.adobe.com) Adobe also opened Firefly to outside model providers, saying in 2025 that Google Cloud and OpenAI models were available in Firefly, with more partners to follow. Adobe said the product was built so creators could generate images, video, audio, and vectors in one place and move that work into Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Express, and other production apps. (news.adobe.com) That product design now shows up in pricing and usage rules. Adobe’s March 30, 2026 documentation says standard generations such as Generative Fill are included broadly, while premium features such as video generation and partner models consume more credits and require eligible plans. (helpx.adobe.com) Adobe’s latest financial report points the same way. In first-quarter fiscal 2026 results released March 12, Adobe said Firefly subscription and credit-pack ending annual recurring revenue grew 75% quarter over quarter, while Acrobat AI Assistant annual recurring revenue tripled year over year. (news.adobe.com) (fool.com) The split is becoming clearer: model makers are competing on raw generation quality, while Adobe is selling editing, approvals, file formats, and enterprise workflow around that generation. Adobe’s own product pages now list partner models from Google, OpenAI, Ideogram, and others alongside Adobe tools such as Photoshop Generative Fill and Illustrator Text to Vector Graphic. (news.adobe.com) (helpx.adobe.com) The Acrobat patch shows the other half of Adobe’s business. A company that sits inside documents, design files, contracts, and approvals has to ship new artificial intelligence features and still keep old, widely installed software secure.
