Whoop Rolls Out AI-Powered Strength Training Features
Performance wearable company Whoop has expanded its AI capabilities with two major updates, including smarter strength training recommendations. A new beta feature aims to tailor workouts based on user history and recovery data. The updates also include new automated activity detection and deeper analysis of user readiness.
- The new Strength Trainer AI feature moves beyond just explaining data by actively building personalized workout plans based on a user's recovery status, recent activity, and specific goals. Users can input goals with natural language, and the AI will generate a full workout with exercises, sets, reps, and suggested weights based on past performance. - This functionality builds on the existing Whoop Coach, which was developed in partnership with OpenAI and uses GPT-4 to answer user questions about their biometric data. The previous iteration focused on providing conversational insights into a user's health data, while the new update gives the AI a more direct role in decision-making for future workouts. - A key technological aspect of the Strength Trainer is its ability to quantify "muscular load," not just cardiovascular strain. It uses the device's accelerometer and gyroscope to analyze the volume and intensity of specific exercises, aiming to provide a more complete picture of the body's workload than heart rate alone. - The AI's workout recommendations are context-aware; for example, it will suggest a less intense session if a user has a low recovery score, ensuring training aligns with their physiological readiness. Users can also give follow-up prompts to the AI to modify the generated workout, such as making it shorter or changing the muscle group focus. - The company has been actively expanding its health monitoring capabilities, recently launching the Whoop 5.0 and a medical-grade device, Whoop MG. These newer devices feature improved sensors that capture data more frequently, which in turn feeds more precise information into the AI algorithms for more accurate insights. - In the competitive landscape, rivals like Oura, Garmin, and Fitbit also utilize AI for personalized health insights. Garmin's "Body Battery" and Oura's in-depth sleep analysis are comparable features, but Whoop is differentiating itself by focusing its AI on generating structured strength-training plans that quantify musculoskeletal load.
